Sad, somber, and downright depressing at times – and not just for Seahawks fans. We’re talking Super Bowl XLIX ads, of course. Good grief! We knew full well we’d get all weepy over that Best Buds ad, even though we’d seen it dozens of times over the last week. But Nationwide, Nissan and others were outright buzz-killers! We’re still of the opinion that the big game is a momentary suspension of reality; that for just a few hours nothing else matters except for what happens on the field. Yes, it’s just a game. Yes, there are heavier things. We’ll give those brands credit for attempting to flip the script on the whole celebratory vibe of the Super Bowl party, but …
No matter! There were plenty of GREAT Super Bowl ads that brought us to our feet last night, or at least earned a standing O from our roomful of revelers. A ton of creativity was on display, as expected, and there were some clear winners – and losers – before the Lombardi trophy presentation.
Fiat 500X Blue Pill
Who needs to talk features and amenities when you’ve got a built-in punch-line like this? Fiat has always done a bang-up job capitalizing on the size of its offerings. They didn’t disappoint here! If you’ve seen ANY televised sporting event over the last several years, you know you can’t escape the ads for ED. This one was spot on!

Budweiser: Lost Dog
A number one for lots of folks, and a solid second place for us. No one, and we mean no one could possibly keep from welling up when those Clydesdales come to the rescue of our favorite lost dog. That’s if you weren’t already reaching for the kleenex when he’s parked inside that box out in the pouring rain!

Doritos: Middle Seat
“It’s not contagious…” but the uproar at our party sure as hell was when we saw this spot! Best pump-fake EVER for scaring-off a would-be seat mate. The whole thing happened so fast, we never saw the punchline coming. Perfectly done, since you didn’t really need to hear it to get it.
Loctite Glue: Positive Feelings
And now for something completely different. Somehow, we hadn’t seen this one before the game. And we couldn’t have been more happy and surprised! THIS is how you sell glue during the Super Bowl! Most of the guys in our group knew all about this brand, but we can only guess how many introductions were made Sunday night. The joke at the end was a dud – and completely unnecessary – for Lcotite to #winatglue and a spot in our top 5!
Avocados from Mexico: First Draft Ever
Doug Flutie, Jerry Rice, and … guacamole? We LOVED this for what it was: fun, simple, and to-the-point, and for what it wasn’t. Avocado is EVERYWHERE these days. No need to sell that point. Injecting “brand” into the equation? It harkens back to the days of the California raisins, but without the talking fruit. Excellent first round pic, Mexico!
